If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you might be noticing some changes as you’re reading this post. After much thought and reflection (over the span of my week-plus long break), I’ve finally settled on a niche for my blog… And with a newly discovered niche comes a new look! Whether you’re new or a loyal reader, welcome to the all new A Liz Lifestyle with lifestyle reviews for the everyday! (And yes, all old reviews will be updated and reposted at a later date.)

Let’s start out this brand new look and niche with a book review. You’ll notice as I do more and more book reviews that my guilty reading pleasure is smut (another smutty review will be coming at you next week), specifically smut that falls in the historical romance sub-genre.

I’m also constantly searching for the next romance series that I can get lost in, but if you read smut as much as I do, you know there’s a difference between good smut and unbearably cringy smut… Unfortunately, you don’t know until you give the first book a go, so there was some risk in picking up Cold-Hearted Rake, but the benefits outweighed the risk since this is one of a seven-book series called “The Ravenels”. Let’s dive in:

“A twist of fate…

“Devon Ravenel, London’s most wickedly charming rake, has just inherited an earldom. But his powerful new rank in society comes with unwanted responsibilities… and more than a few surprises. His estate is saddled with debt, and the late earl’s three innocent sisters are still occupying the house… along with Kathleen, Lady Trenear, a beautiful young widow whose sharp wit and determination are a match for Devon’s own.

“A clash of wills…

“Kathleen knows better than to trust a ruthless scoundrel like Devon. But the fiery attraction between them is impossible to deny—and from the first moment Devon holds her in his arms, he vows to do whatever it takes to possess her. As Kathleen finds herself yielding to his skillfully erotic seduction, only one question remains:

“Can she keep from surrendering her heart to the most dangerous man she’s ever known?” (Source: Goodreads)

What I Liked About the Book:

This book isn’t your typical smutty romance where it follows two characters on their journey towards love… It does follow one, but it builds up another love interest for the reader to be mindful of and root for.

As well, the epilogue isn’t your typical “And they lived happily ever after” epilogue. The epilogue leaves you wanting to read the next book because it ends on a cliffhanger, which goes against how historical romance books typically end. It made me want to read the second book even more!

What I Disliked About the Book:

The main thing that bugged me about this book was the Ravenel twins, Cassandra and Pandora. They were insufferable, Pandora more so than Cassandra. Because this is the first book of “The Ravenels” series and Cassandra and Pandora are Ravenels, I know they’ll each eventually be the main love interest down the line. I just hope they mature by the time they make their series debut as the main character.

*Spoilers ahead! Proceed with caution.* Also, and I know I’m going to get a lot of eye rolls for saying this, but the love between Kathleen and Devon literally came out of nowhere. This isn’t unusual for the genre as a whole, but usually, there’s some build up to the initial profession of love. In Cold-Hearted Rake, there really wasn’t any buildup to that point. It was like day and night – first, they were indifferent of each other, then all of a sudden they’re getting hitched? Feelings don’t just manifest that quickly!

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This book was satisfactory and not too bad of a read.

Honestly, this book would’ve gotten 4 stars if Cassandra and Pandora were never a part of the story. To me, they were just dead weight and unnecessary. Even if they didn’t have as big of a role as they did (too big of a role for minor characters, if you ask me), then again, I’d have given it 4 stars.

Either way, I was more so interested in the secondary romance happening behind the scenes than I was the main romance which is why I’m settling for 3 stars. On top of everything happening behind the scenes, the epilogue is what really hooked me and peaked my interest to continue the series.

      1. That’s okay! Before reading Cold-Hearted Rake, I was on a Regency romance binge, one of those being The Duke and I. What got me into Victorian romance was Bringing Down the Duke… If you haven’t read that one, I highly recommend it. Thanks for reading 🙂

        1. I don’t even remember the first historical romance I read was at this point. 😅
I did check it out though and it sounds pretty great! I’ll have to keep my eye out for a copy.. Thank you!
